David Onyiego is a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who earned his undergraduate degree from Methodist University and his graduate degree from Northeastern University. Before transitioning into psychiatry, David built a robust clinical foundation in neurotrauma critical care and high-acuity ICU settings, including the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Medical Center. This experience at the bedside shaped his deep understanding of how physical trauma, emotional distress, and recovery intersect during a person's most vulnerable moments.
David specializes in treating mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, trauma-related symptoms, treatment-resistant depression, and co-occurring substance use. He is particularly dedicated to supporting adults, adolescents, and underserved populations, including immigrants and trauma survivors. His clinical interests also extend to the impact of social media, identity development, and modern stressors on youth mental health.
Integrating medication management, therapy-informed care, and psychoeducation, David emphasizes shared decision-making and cultural humility. He believes effective treatment goes beyond symptom management, focusing instead on a patient’s unique lived experience, culture, and personal goals. His practice includes trauma-informed care and holistic psychiatry, utilizing tools like Spravato and TMS to support long-term stability.
